Vertical and Horizontal integration

Definitions;

Vertical integration: This is when a company can control every stage of production, distribution and exhibition. This is for a new film release because all the companies make profit from every aspect of film production.

Horizontal integration: when a company owns companies that help produce websites, merchandising, DVD releases etc.

An Example:

Entertainment: Marvel Entertainment; ABC Studios; ABC Media Production; Pixar; Walt Disney Pictures; Walt Disney Records; Hollywood Records; Mammoth Records; Buena Vista Records; Lyric Street Records
Other: Buena Vista Concerts; Disney Mobile; Disney Theatrical Productions; the Disney Store; Disney theme parks and water parks; Disney English; Disney Interactive Media Group; Disney Games; Playdom, Inc.
In order for Slumdog to distribute to a big range of target audience, they need to make an alliance and create a synergy with a few companies such as Warner Bros, Fox Searchlight.

Associated Companies
There are many companies that help produce and distribute Slumdog Millionaire. Pathe (UK), Eros Entertainment (India), Fox Searchlight Pictures, Warner Bros (US) and Icon Film Distribution (Australia)

Question 3

The USA is ranked the largest media conglomerate with The Walk Disney Company being their number once source of income.

These companies can benefit smaller companies because it can give them financial support. It is a positive for both companies because smaller companies can now have a wider range of ideas as they have now more money and bigger companies earn recognition if the film is a success, in this case, Slumdog Millionaire was.

However it can be hard for them to survive in a market where you are competing against other bigger companies. Ways small British companies can compete is to enter film festivals to help them gain more recognition.

Web 2.0 is the best way for any indie film but in this case Slumdog to make a good film. Web 2.0 has helped smaller companies make ways of advertising and getting their film out there. There are many ways they can market their film such as social networking, YouTube adverts, Google banners and many more ways.
