Gravity

What new piece of technology did the team invent to create the

impression of no gravity in space?

The 'Lightbox' or 'Sandy's Cage' was an invention that was made especially for the film Gravity. This was special because it featured a Bot and Dolly motion control which helps show a realistic experience. George and Sandra were both strapped to the bottom of the camera to show a POV. The box was a 10m cube with LED panels that contained nearly 2 million lights.

The Use of LED allowed the lighting technician to have much greater flexibility and have more traditional lights. The LED's reflect the true colours of the sky and stars, Earth, Moon and Sunlight.

Why did they need to create this? What benefits did it bring to the

filming process?

This invention helps show an in depth motion and experience of what it would actually be like to be in space. A sense of realism helps capture the audience and thats what makes it a successful film. When Sandra was attached to the middle of a rig with the camera above, it helped show that she was spinning round, however it is not her thats spinning it is the camera that gives off the illusion that it makes it look like it is her.

Pick out an example of technological synergy..

.What difference did the LED lights make to filming?

The Use of LED allowed the lighting technician to have much greater flexibility and have more traditional lights. The LED's reflect the true colours of the sky and stars, Earth, Moon and Sunlight.

In which ways was the technology used in the filming

process groundbreaking?
